Oreo’s journey from emergency to recovery at Central Vet Midwater

Oreo’s Journey: From Emergency to Recovery

Cats explore the world with remarkable curiosity, and sometimes an ordinary household object can lead to an unexpected emergency. That is exactly what happened to sweet little Oreo.

Oreo arrived at Central Vet Midwater with a sewing needle lodged in the roof of her mouth. Accidents like this can happen in seconds and are not a reason for an owner to feel blamed or judged. What matters most is recognising that something is wrong and seeking help as quickly as possible.

Finding the safest way forward

Our team examined Oreo carefully and used X-rays to identify the needle’s exact position. This allowed the veterinary team to understand the safest approach before attempting removal.

With careful planning and precise handling, the needle was successfully extracted. The procedure required patience, a gentle touch and close attention to the delicate tissues of Oreo’s mouth.

Why needles, thread and string can be dangerous

Sharp objects can injure the mouth, throat or digestive tract. Sewing needles may also be attached to thread, which can become caught under the tongue or move through the stomach and intestines. Pulling on visible thread or string can cause additional internal injury.

Possible warning signs include:

  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Drooling or repeated swallowing
  • Gagging or retching
  • Difficulty eating or refusing food
  • Vomiting
  • Sudden quietness, discomfort or hiding
  • A visible object, string or thread in the mouth

What owners should do

  • Contact a veterinarian promptly.
  • Keep your cat calm and transport them safely in a carrier.
  • Do not attempt to pull out an embedded object.
  • Never pull visible string or thread from the mouth or anus.
  • Avoid offering food until your veterinary team advises you, as sedation or a procedure may be required.

Simple prevention at home

Curiosity is a natural and lovable part of being a cat. These steps can help make the home safer without limiting normal play:

  • Store needles, pins and sewing supplies in a securely closed container.
  • Check that all needles are accounted for after sewing.
  • Dispose of loose thread, ribbon and fishing line immediately.
  • Supervise play with string toys and pack them away afterwards.
  • Keep craft baskets and work surfaces out of reach when unattended.

A happy ending for Oreo

We were delighted that Oreo made a full recovery and returned to her normal, bright and inquisitive self. Her story reflects the value of diagnostic imaging, thoughtful planning and the steady hands of a veterinary team working together with deep care.

We are incredibly proud of the team involved in Oreo’s case and grateful that her family trusted us with her care.

If your pet may have swallowed or become injured by a needle, string or another foreign object, contact Central Vet Midwater as soon as possible.
