A fast and focused team response

From the moment Cody arrived, our team worked quickly and calmly to assess his breathing, support his body and begin the treatment he needed. Antivenom was administered promptly, together with intensive supportive care and close monitoring.

Cases like Cody’s require teamwork, careful observation and the ability to respond as a patient’s condition changes. Every member of the team played a role in giving this brave little dog the best possible chance of recovery.

Why a rinkhals bite is an emergency

Snake encounters can happen very quickly, particularly with curious or protective dogs. This is not a reflection of poor care by an owner. Even closely watched pets can investigate movement in grass, around wood piles or near farm buildings before anyone has time to react.

Rinkhals venom can affect the nervous system and interfere with the muscles needed for breathing. It can also damage tissue around the bite. A pet may deteriorate rapidly, which is why immediate veterinary attention is essential.

What to do after a suspected snakebite

  • Move your pet away from the snake without placing yourself in danger.
  • Keep your pet as quiet and still as possible.
  • Contact a veterinary practice immediately and begin travelling there.
  • Do not cut the wound, attempt to suck out venom, apply ice or use a tourniquet.
  • Do not try to catch or handle the snake. A photograph taken from a safe distance may help, but treatment should never be delayed to identify it.

Reducing the risk of future encounters

It is impossible to prevent every snake encounter, especially on farms and in rural areas, but a few practical steps may reduce the risk:

  • Keep grass trimmed around frequently used areas.
  • Clear clutter, building materials and wood piles where snakes may shelter.
  • Supervise pets near long grass, rocks, sheds and feed-storage areas.
  • Use a lead in unfamiliar or high-risk areas.
  • Keep your veterinary practice’s number readily available.
