Sterilising your cat is an important part of responsible pet care. Neutering male cats and spaying female cats can improve their health and safety while helping to prevent unwanted litters.
Benefits for male cats
- Unneutered males are more likely to roam in search of females.
- Roaming increases the risk of road accidents, becoming lost and exposure to other hazards.
- Male cats may fight more frequently, which can lead to painful wounds and abscesses.
- Fighting increases the risk of serious infections, including feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV).
Benefits for female cats
Female cats are induced ovulators and may return to heat repeatedly during breeding season. Cats in heat can become very vocal and restless and may try to escape to find a mate.
Spaying:
- Prevents unwanted pregnancies
- Eliminates heat cycles
- Prevents serious uterine disease, including pyometra
- Reduces the risk of mammary cancer, especially when performed at an appropriate age
When is breeding season?
In South Africa, cat breeding activity is usually highest from spring through late summer, generally from August to March. Indoor cats and cats living in warm environments may cycle throughout the year.
